la bodeguita del medio

la bodeguita del medio

It’s comforting to see a portly chef, especially one seemingly skipping off with the rest of the watermelon. At the very least a corpulent cook tells you the food is edible. What more does one want?

As noted in Castro's Downfall (part 2) : Cuban Cocktales the innocence of this seeimingly harmless cyclist should not be overestimated.

It was here we delivered a bag full of organges to a middle-aged sex worker. See Castro's Downfall (part 3): Citrus for the Mistress

Here, in the picturesque city of Trinidad, Fidel Castro’s end was planned. Read how all began with Castro's Downfall (part 1)

fidel's last speech, plaza de la revolucion

fidel's last speech, plaza de la revolucion

Squint and you’ll see Fidel Castro at the podium, dressed in his trademark military uniform. It would be his last ever speech in the Revolution Plaza and one of his last ever as presidente. Look closely and you notice he’s already beginning to slump into the microphone.

Read why in Castro's Downfall (part 4): Día de los Trabajadores

abre la puerta, la habana

abre la puerta, la habana

“Maria!” he bellowed. “Abre la puerte!”

A loud but indecipherable female voice barked back. A chain lock jangled inside and the door swung open. A thin woman stood in the doorway, her hand on her hip. She was barefoot, wore a pink faux-leather miniskirt and green vest which she had rolled up above her small pot belly. A trail of thin black hair stretched from the waistband of her skirt to her exposed navel.

viva cuba libre, la habana

viva cuba libre, la habana

I took this photo on my first trip to Cuba in 2006. Later, I realised the Lonely Planet plagiarised it by using the image in one of their guide books without my permission. While the LP's lawyers claimed the image used by the Lonely Planet was not mine because it had different people in it and was taken at a different angle, it's clear they missed the point - what they stole was my original idea to photograph this particular wall. Idea theft, if you will. Another reason to boycott the LP. Tony Montana (part 1)

a group of bloody guajiros play rock, scissors, stone to determine who will get to keep the prized donkey skin. For details see Slaying a Donkey

aguardiente

Flaying a donkey works up a thirst. Three of the guajiros sit back on a grassy bank and enjoy homemade aguardiente - a drink which could easily strip paint.

The scene of Havana’s biggest cutlery-themed black market deal. It’s said the value of knives and forks plummeted in the immediate hours afterwards. See A Good Fork in Havana

The scene of a public flashing (read Coastal Interruptus for full details), the area is nonetheless still used by legitimate bathers. The concrete-crafted signage above the entrance shown here has long since crumbled away - I took this photo in 2007 - to be replaced with a cheaper, less artful, plastic board. Quite literally a sign of the times in Cuba.
